Module 3 Blog Prompt

Select and post your response on one of the following three bio-ethical issues:

Issue 1 Peter Singer : What philosophical position informs his views on those issues? Support your answers citing relevant scholarly sources (your course text may be a source). What counterargument could one make from the opposing philosophical position, and how would he/she support the "rightness" of this position?

Issue 2: "Ashley Treatment"—what bioethical issues does it raise about personhood, rights, etc. of individuals who are regarded as having severe disabilities? What family-related issues does this treatment raise? What issues does it raise regarding Ashley's QOL and/or that of individuals like Ashley who have similarly severely disabling conditions? Do parents have the right to make the kind of choices that Ashley's made? What position do you take on this issue and why? What philosophical position informs your views?

Issue 3: Terri Schiavo's Identify and contrast the philosophical positions that are taken by Terri, her husband aka legal executor of her living will, and Terri's own family—the Schindlers. What lessons about severe disability does this case bring to the fore?

Module 2 Blog Prompt

In what ways are Oliver's (1990) provocative views on the politics of labeling disability similar to or different from Aimee Mullin's views on what disability means? Support your position.

Module 1 Blog Prompt

"The images of disability as portrayed in Christmas in Purgatory are biased and sensationalized. They are not reflective of the lives of persons with disabilities today and therefore should be summarily dismissed as a thing of the past. All that is in the past and today we have advanced tremendously. Persons with SPD are integrated in society and have adequate care and protection." Take a position for or against this assertion, providing appropriate reasoning for your position. Whenever possible, cite appropriate research.

Introductions

One of the biggest struggles for me in switching to online instruction is giving up the opportunity to meet each of you in person. Teaching and learning is completely an interactional process. As such, I am still having a hard time in this 21st century space of online instruction despite my being a self-professed tech adventurer! With that confession, let's take some time to introduce ourselves and have fun with this assignment. Post a message introducing yourself to the rest of the class. Feel free to respond to your peers' posting. Please be sure to include the following:
 Your personal and/or professional background.
 Your career aspirations
 Your major/classification
 How you spend your time outside of school and work
 What do you think is the secret to a good life
 Something interesting about you: (yes, THERE is something interesting about you that I would not know by looking at you or reading your work)
 If you would like to do so, please insert a photo of yourself.
******
There are two ways of completing this assignment. You can simply click on Comments at the end of this post and add your introduction; OR, To introduce yourself, you can initate a new post of your introduction. Instructions on how to initiate a post are provided on this (landing/home) page of this blog.

Module 7 Blog Prompt

Today, a growing number of persons with disabilities are fulfilling their desire for marriage and life-long partnership with a significant other. However, though many strong advocates of people with SPD support the idea that persons with SPD should have independence and be integrated in their communities, many such advocates do not envision those adult outcomes as including persons with SPD expressing their sexuality (---a perfectly normative QOL outcome of adulthood). . Comment on the ways in which this is evidenced in the video. How might a teacher brooch the subject of sexuality as a critical aspect of transition planning?
